War-walking/neighborhood sniffing

One of my sisters lives with her husband in Provo. Last year, I promised that I would see what kind of wireless networks I could sniff out around their apartment, just to see if they might happen to have a generous neighbor they could tap for high-speed net access.

Didn't get around to it until last night. It was the first time since that I happened to have my laptop with me (I don't usually take my computer on social calls). Unfortunately, my current laptop has built-in wireless, so I don't have an easy way to do an exhaustive Pringle investigation.

So I sat in their living room. Nothing. Move around a bit. Nothing. About what I expected.

On my way back to take my laptop to the car, I decided to check in the courtyard. Wow. Some neighbor has wireless, and was apparently offering it to the neighborhood (if I understand the meaning of "default" as an SSID). Works great, 1.3Mb/s downstream, 200kb/s upstream.

After further investigation, I found that optimal connectivity was right outside my sister's front door. Their neighbors might think it weird that they sit for hours with their laptop outside their front door, but I'm sure that's not the only weird thing that happens in their apartment complex.

Next up, I need to find a wireless card for them with an antenna jack, so I can wire up a way for them to access the net from their bedroom office. But maybe that would be too blatant.
